Manicurist Jill Thomas

Why I LOVE doing nails:

Jill Thomas ManicuristJill Thomas NailsI love doing nails because I believe I’m naturally artistic, nurturing, patient, detail-oriented, I love working with people and I have an eye for beauty and style. I’m huge on shaping! My father and grandfather excelled in the dental world and taught around the world. My grandfather, Dr. Peter K. Thomas, invented dental tools and techniques that are still used today. My father made beautiful veneers, wax molds and worked with gold. He used to tell me, we have ‘it’ in our hands. He meant that genetically we are very good with our hands and know how intuitively to work with materials and small subjects. My sister is also a top hairstylist in Beverly Hills, specializing in color, cuts, and healthy, sexy hair.

I also believe that how our hands look influences whether we want to flaunt them or hide them. When our nails are done, we can be more free and expressive. Nails are an accessory, they are part of the package, they are like the icing on a cupcake, lipstick on the lips, perfume on the body. Whether going to the post office or an event, we feel more “together” when our nails are groomed.  I’m honored to be able to deliver nail service in a skillful way.

A little about me:

Jill Thomas ManicuristSince a very young age I noticed woman’s hands and nails. And in my mind, I’d pick out my favorites nails on them! I noticed some were shaped better than others. I also grew up with a very fancy grandmother who lived in Beverly Hills. When we’d go visit her (from Maui where I grew up) I used to sit in her bathroom and watch her put her make up on and I was amazed at the transformation and process. I’d even get to hold her eyelash glue on my hand, that was very exciting and fun for young Jill!  She also used to get weekly manicures, at the time she was getting paper wraps. This was back in the 70’s and early 80’s. Sometimes she’d switch to acrylic and then back to natural and paper. I was always in awe of how nice her hands looked with such vivid colors or a french manicure. And her feet were always proper as well. Sometimes I’d even get to go with her to nail appointment if the timing worked out. Her manicurist was Melanie from Russia. A very sweet, warm, caring robust woman from Russia. She was like family to us. This is when I noticed being a manicurist requires care and warmth.

At the age of 10 I asked my mom if I could get my nails done. It was one my favorite thing to do, get a manicure and pedicure! I was obsessed from an early age, therefore,  it was only natural for me to want to become a manicurist. It felt so natural for me and again, I was always noticing woman’s nails. In beauty school you weren’t allowed to work on clients after you had some times under your belt, on day 2 of school I was allowed to work on clients. Another rule, you weren’t allowed to apply red or apply a french after being in school for 2 months.  For me, they made the acceptation, I was doing it right away. It all came very natural for me.

I worked at two of the most upscale salons in Hawaii. The first one was in Maui, under the rule of Dianna Hudson, award winning nail tech and owner of The Nail Shop.  She trained her staff with such attention to detail and technique. I feel very fortunate to have learned from her and worked in such an amazing and beautiful environment for the first 10 years of my career. Then I moved to Oahu and worked at the elegant Hanalei Salon Boutique (unfortunately it no longer exists) and got to work side by side with one of Oahu’s best, Hanalei Williams. These two salons and teachers helped me be very comfortable in upscale settings with an elite clientele.  Then in ’99 I moved to Los Angeles and started working at Umberto’s Salon. For the first time I was on my own.

In my spare time I like to meditate, read, hike, do Bikram Yoga, spend time with family and friends, laugh, be outside, appreciate nature, see movies, and travel….. all the good stuff life has to offer. I basically like to live life to the fullest. And that includes sleep and relaxation. The older I’ve gotten, the more I realize the importance of this. Theres a reason it’s called beauty rest. There are many elements that add to our health, wholeness beauty. and nails are one big detail!
